Noxious Weeds

Noxious Weeds

The term 'noxious' is commonly used as a substitute for 'invasive.' However, it has a more specific connotation in that it is used to indicate a plant that has a direct impact on the agricultural industry and human health. Classifying a plant as noxious doesn't necessarily mean that the plant has met the biological characteristics used for an 'invasive' plant, such as the criteria used by IPANE. In fact, the anthropocentric nature of the noxious weed definition completely overlooks plants that are invasive only in environmental systems, which are commonly differentiated as environmental weeds (as opposed to economic weeds) in countries such as Australia.
