Meadow knapweed is a hybrid between brownray knapweed (Centaurea jacea L.) and lesser knapweed (Centaurea nigra L.). This perennial knapweed prefers moist roadsides, river banks, moist meadows and forest openings. Leaves are up to 6 in. (15.2 cm) long and 1 in. (2.5 cm) wide and decrease in size as they move up the stem. The lower leaves are toothed or lobed and the upper leaves are linear. Flowering occurs in May to August. Flowers are pink to purple, contained in heads and located at the tips of the branches. Bracts subtending the flower head are brown with a fringed margin. Seeds are 1/8in. (0.3 cm) long. Meadow knapweed is native to Europe.
