EDDMapS IPM helps coordinate information from many different sources to not only provide a clearer picture of current pest and disease activity, but also distribute that information to help people make better pest management decisions based on timely information.

The current functionality of EDDMapS IPM is limited to crop advisors, county extension agents, and extension specialists reporting current pest and disease activity via smartphone. The commodities are hand-selected by a few extension specialists in Georgia who are willing to act as testers to help us refine the basic process and work with our county agents on getting in reliable data. These include blueberry, cotton, wheat, vegetables, grain sorghum, corn and soybean. Only a handful of pests are included with priority given to pests that affect more than one crop and whose presence in one crop may affect management in another.

If funded, future enhancements of this system will include:

  • providing extension specialists tools to customize the system including:
    • what pests are recorded in a commodity
    • the levels of pest activity they want to record
    • the levels of pest activity that will trigger alerts to other users
  • incorporate timely alerts and notifications via push alert and e-mail to users based on pest activity and their geographic area of responsibility
