Berberis julianae is an evergreen shrub that grows up to 6 ft. (1.8 m) tall and 2-4 ft. (0.61-1.2 m) wide. It is native to Central China.

Foliage

Shiny, dark green, simple leaves are 2-4 in. (cm) long by 0.5 in. (cm) wide. Leaves turn a wine red color in the fall.

Flowers

Yellow flowers tinged with red grow in clusters of up to 25 flowers and have a faint buttery scent. Blooms April through May.

Fruit

Fruits are football-shaped berries.

Ecological Threat

B. julianae tolerates full sun to partial sun and a range of soil types but prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Can be found in abandoned fields, early & late succession forest, floodplains, roadsides, and backyard gardens. There are numerous cultivars and hybrids.
