common tansy
(Tanacetum vulgare)
This species is Introduced in the United States
Relative Information: The common tansy is a perennial weed. It grows well in fertile, well-drained soils, and under full sunlight.
Problems: The common tansy is poisonous to livestock and humans. However, poisoning cases are rare since the weed is unpalatable to livestock. The weed forms large, dense stocks that can compete with native species or crops.
Chemical Controls:
*all controls are shown in alphabetical order
**Read the label for ingredients, application rates, instructions and safety protocols
- Clearview
- Clearview Brush
- Clearview + 2,4-D amine
- Milestone + 2,4-D amine
- Navius
- Sightline
- Truvist
- Navius (suppression only)
- Restore II (Apply during juvenile stage)
- Reclaim II
Mechanical Controls: Effective when used with a chemical control. Repeated mowing will prevent seed production and regrowth from rootstock.
Biological Controls: No biological control agents at this time.
Cultivation: Ineffective. The root pieces will produce new weeds.
*Grazing: Somewhat effective. Not palatable to cattle and horses, however, sheep and goats are known to graze on common tansy.
*Any grazing on invasive species should not be considered.
