Origin
Native to the west of the Mississippi River basin in the central United States from southern Wisconsin and eastern Indiana to south Louisiana.

Life Cycle
Spawning peaks in early to mid-summer extending into the fall months on gravel riffles, on or near submerged objects, or in association with sunfish nests. C. lutrensis adults live near the surface in midwater where they feed primarily on small invertebrates.

Distribution
Widely distributed in the United States.

Control Efforts
Prevention of new introductions through the prohibition of sales of C. lutrensis as baitfish and aquarium species is recommended.
