Origin
Aratinga erythrogenys is native to South America. Red-masked parakeets were introduced to the United States as escaped or intentionally released pets.
Life Cycle
A. erythrogenys plumage is primarily green in color with red feathers on the cheeks and forecrown. The underpart of the body is more yellow in color. Adult A. erythrogenys are 12.8 in (33 cm) in length and weigh 5.8-7 oz (165-200 g). Red-masked parakeet diet includes fruits and flowers. A. erythrogenys are found in small social groups and large communal flocks outside of breeding season. Females lay 3-4 eggs per clutch. Incubation averages 24 days with another 7-9 weeks until hatchlings fledge from the nest.
Distribution
Red-masked parakeets are found in Florida, Hawaii, California, and El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico.
