Origin
Aratinga mitrata is native to South America. Mitred parakeet were introduced to the United States in California, Florida, and Hawaii as escaped or intentionally released pets.

Life Cycle
Plumage of mitred parakeets is green in color on the body with speckled red feathers on the sides of their head, throat, breast, abdomen, and back of the neck. The average length of A. mitrata is 15 in. (38 cm). There is a white ring around the eyes. A. mitrata occur in small to large social flocks outside of breeding season.

Distribution
In the United States, populations mainly occur in urban parks and residential areas in Florida, Hawaii, and California.

Control Efforts
The effects of A. mitrata on native species is unknown.
