Major Hosts:

Often associated with hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) infestations and is most commonly found on hemlock, yew, spruce and fir.

Key Features:

Insects: Typical armored scales with elongated bodies; females are 3/32 of an inch in size and light to dark brown in color; males are 1/16th of an inch in size and white in color.

Damage: Scales are found attached to undersides of needles; feeding causes yellowing of needles and premature needle loss.

Control/management:

Elongate hemlock scale is often not controlled with the same products used to control the hemlock woolly adelgid. Products containing dinotefuran are most effective when applied right after crawler emergence and settling (early to mid-June). Contact your local professional for treatment recommendations.
