Cygnus atratus is native to Australia. Black swan were introduced to the United States as ornamental birds that have escaped.
Life Cycle
Swans are large (43-56 in., 110-142 cm in length) with a weight 8-20 lbs (3.7-9 kg). Plumage is black with white flight feathers and the bill is bright red in coloration with a pale bar and tip. C. atratus are herbivorous with a diet including aquatic and marshland plants. Black swan are largely monogamous with females laying 5-6 eggs per clutch. Incubation last 35-48 days with young able to fly at around 6 months of age.
Distribution
C. atratus are found as feral populations in Florida.
