Sirex woodwasp (Sirex noctilio) Fabricius, 1793

Origin
Native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa.

Life Cycle
Female S. noctilio insert their ovipositor into the sapwood through the bark of physiologically stressed pines. During insertion, a toxic venom and spores of the symbiotic fungus Amylostereum areolatum are introduced. Adult S. noctilio emerges through round exit holes after larvae consume the fungus.

Distribution
S. noctilio has spread into the Midwestern and northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.

Control Efforts
Forest managers must follow appropriate thinning schedules to maintain healthy tree stands and to monitor S. noctilio populations.
