Origin
Aix galericulata is native to Asia. Mandarin duck were introduced to the United States as escapees or intentionally released captive breed ducks.

Life Cycle
Adult male A. galericulata are elaborate in plumage with distinct long orange feathers on the face, a pair of “sail” feathers rising vertically above the back, crest feathers that are cream and orange in color, and a broad white feather eye-stripes. Females are duller in coloration. A. galericulata are approximately 16-19 in. (41-49 cm) in length, with a wingspan of 26.8-29 in. (68-74 cm), and weight of 0.95-1.5 lb. (430-690 g). Nests are found in tree cavities. Female A. galericulata lay 9-12 eggs per clutch. Incubation is performed by the female and lays approximately 29 days. After 40-45 days chicks leave the flock to form new groups.

Distribution
Isolated populations of A. galericulata are found within the United States.
