Origin
Geochelone carbonaria is native to South America. Red-footed tortoise were introduced to the United States as escaped or intentionally released pets.
Life Cycle
Male G. carbonaria are larger than females at 13.5 in. (34 cm) and 11 in. (29 cm) in length, respectively. Shells are bumpy with small separate spots of yellow or tan coloration on each bump. Male red-footed tortoise has a more obtuse rear anal notch than females. G. carbonaria are found in dry and wet savannah, grassland, and forest areas. Diet is primarily herbivorous. During the breeding season, females lay 5-15 eggs in an excavated burrow. Adults exhibit no parental care once eggs are laid. Incubation ranges from 117-158 days and, upon hatching, young are completely independent.
