sailfin catfish
(Genus Pterygoplichthys)
This species is Introduced in the United States
Origin
Pterygoplichthys spp. are native to South America and have been introduced to many regions outside its native range, including North America, Central America, Asia, etc.
Life Cycle
Pterygoplichthys spp. are medium to large catfish that measure 12-22 in. (30-55 cm) in length. Pterygoplichthys spp. are distinguishable from native North American catfishes (Ictaluridae) by the presence of flexible bony plates and a ventral suctorial mouth. Another distinguishable feature is 9-14 dorsal-fin rays. Sailfin catfish have a high reproductive rate and a diet that includes benthic algae and detritus.
Distribution
Pterygoplichthys spp. are found in Florida, Puerto Rico, and a few reports in several other states. Observations to species level expand the area these have been found.
Control Efforts
Avoid releasing unwanted fish into open waters to reduce future introductions.
