Origin
Sarotherodon melanotheron is native to tropical regions in Africa. Blackchin tilapia were likely introduced to the United States as escaped or intentionally released individuals from fish farms or aquariums.

Life Cycle
S. melanotheron are similar in form and coloration to other sunfish and black basses. Blackchin tilapia are distinguishable by a single nostril opening on each side of the head and a discontinuous or two-part lateral line. Adult S. melanotheron are approximately 10 in. (26 cm) in length. Blackchin tilapia primarily consume cyanobacteria, algae, and diatoms. S. melanotheron are paternal mouthbrooders with females acting aggressively during the breeding season. Blackchin tilapia are found in brackish coastal lagoons, drainage ditches, canals, and creek mouths.

Distribution
S. melanotheron is established in Florida and Hawaii.

Control Efforts
S. melanotheron reduces the abundance of native centrarchids and other fish.
